Box Hill
London, England

  • June 8, 1873

On Sunday 8 June 1873, Vincent visited Box Hill, southwest of London near the town of Dorking, with his boss Charles Obach (1840/41–?). According to Vincent, the hill was

“partly of chalk and covered with box trees, and on one side a wood of tall oak trees.”

He found the setting beautiful and strikingly different from the Dutch and Belgian landscapes familiar to him.
